Augusta Savage

Augusta Savage

Augusta Savage (1892-1962) was a trailblazing African American sculptor. Denied opportunities for formal artistic education due to her race and gender, Savage worked as a domestic servant to fund her training. Through her dedication and talent, she became a prominent artist in New York, with her work focusing on racial pride and equality. Through her studio, she provided opportunities for black artists who faced similar barriers. Savage fostered a community that believed creativity and expression are important tools for people to develop empathy and compassion for themselves and others.
