Bessie Coleman

1892 - 1926
Bessie Coleman

Bessie Coleman was the first African American woman to earn a pilot’s license, overcoming racial and gender prejudices of the early 20th century. Determined to fly, she learned in France after American flight schools denied her entry. Returning to the U.S., she performed in numerous airshows, refusing to participate if the audience was segregated. Coleman’s direct challenge to discrimination and her success in aviation served as a powerful example of equality and bravery. Her efforts not only paved the way for minorities in aviation but also emphasized the importance of perseverance and equal opportunity in creating a fair society.
