William Henry Sheppard

1865 - 1972
William Henry Sheppard

William Henry Sheppard was an activist and explorer who worked to understand and improve the lives of Congolese people. Born into slavery, Sheppard became one of the first African American missionaries in Congo. Initially influenced by common racist ideas about Africa in the US, he actively worked to change his views and connect with Congolese people as individuals. As he explored Congo, he advocated for indigenous rights and documented Congolese cultural heritage. Sheppard’s unflinching writings exposed the human rights abuses in the Congo Free State and garnered international attention and contributed to global awareness of the harsh conditions faced by Congolese people. His work laid the groundwork for later activism and increased scrutiny on colonial practices, leaving an indelible mark on the fight for the rights and dignity of the Congolese people.
